A website is a collection of related Web pages, images, videos or other digital assets that are addressed with a common domain name (from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Following is an outline of the separate components you pay for when you hire someone to build your site.

Domain Name

A website starts with a domain name, or it's URL. It's the address a visitor types into the address bar of any browser to go to the site. An example of a domain name is The rights to the domain name must be registered for an annual fee.

Your next cost is a hosting fee. Your Web site host stores all of your site's files on a server (a computer permanently connected to the Internet). The host server displays the files to the people who visit your website address.

Site Setup

The setup fee covers a site's design and content placement, as well as the navigation system, or menus. We provide attractive, professional designs. When possible, you should provide your organization's logo graphics. The website should present an impression that coordinates with your other advertising, like business cards, brochures, print ads, etc.

Site Content

Content is organized into pages, including the homepage (or front page or landing page) that automatically loads when a web browser first opens your site. You will provide the information that the designer places in the website. This will be the words, images, or links that the designer places on each individual page. It will help if you provide keyword ideas for search engine success, too.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of modifying your website and enhancing external links in order to boost your rankings on search engines. Another way of saying this is that you want to show up as close to the top as possible in a Google search. Other popular search engines are Bing, Yahoo, Ask, AOL, etc.

Search engines have two major functions: crawling and building an index, and providing search users with a ranked list of the websites they've determined are the most relevant. Search methods have become very dynamic as users have shifted to mobile devices. Here is how Google Search works in 2016.

HOWEVER, understanding your customer is more important than understanding Google’s algorithm. Google pays more attention to your website’s user experience than you think. It’s greatest impact to SEO is through the increase it creates in organic sharing and distribution. You want to make it easy for site visitors to post your website on their social media, like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.  Read about SUX: Search User Experience here.

Your design fee will include baseline SEO work. However, your particular situation might require supplemental SEO attention for an additional hourly rate.
